CULTURE & ARCHAEOLOGY

San Cristobal City & Villages Tour - Half day

We will begin the day with a walking tour of San Cristóbal de las Casas. Highlights of this lovely colonial town are for example its cathedral; the church of Santo Domingo (dating back to the 16th century); and the market place, where the locals and villagers from the surrounding communities get together to buy and sell a great variety of products, fruits, and vegetables. Afterwards we will take you on a 10 minute drive to the village of San Juan Chamula, a typical Indian village inhabited by the Tzotziles, one of the main Indian communities in Chiapas. Visit the village church which is used by the Indians for their religious (pagan) rituals. We will continue our tour to Zinacantán, just a few kilometers away. In this village the Indian traditions have been preserved for centuries and your guide will be happy to share his knowledge about the local customs with you before taking you back to San Cristobal.
*As an add-on to this tour we can arrange a visit to the Na-Bolom or Ambar Museum for you (additional charges of $20/person apply).

Price per person: $84 p.p. (2 pers.), $66 p.p. (3 pers.), $55 p.p. (4-5 pers.),

San Cristobal Museums Tour - Half day

Ambar Museum

On this tour you will visit the Na-Bolum and the Ambar Museum. Na Bolom is a Mexican based non-profit, non-governmental organization founded in 1951 by the Danish Archaeologist and explorer Frans Blom and the Swiss conservationist and photographer Gertrude Duby. The museum was created from the Blom's private collection, featuring five permanent exposition rooms and two temporary exhibit rooms. The ethnographic collection reflects artifacts and gifts collected from the trips its founders made to the Lacandón jungle and offer an interesting insight into the life and work of Mexico's explorers in the beginning of the 20th century. The building's chapel is physically one of the clearest examples of the neoclassical style constructed in San Cristóbal from the end of the nineteenth century. San Cristobal's Ambar Museum in the former convent of La Merced on the other hand presents its visitors the origin of amber, why and where it exists, how it can be found and its uses at present and during prehispanic times. There is also a work shop where you can see the local artists shaping this precious material, a cafeteria, and a souvenir shop.

Price per person: $146 p.p. (2 pers.), $125 p.p. (3 pers.), $100 p.p. (4-5 pers.),
$75 p.p. (6-7 pers.), $59 p.p. (8-9 pers.)

Agua Azul & Palenque Ruins Tour - Full day

Palenque ruins

Enjoy a full day tour to Agua Azul and the archeological site of Palenque, dating back to Mexico's Classic era (from 400-700 AD). Among the most important structures at the site are: The Palace, which has a notable tower that rises above the complex; The Temple of the Sun, Temple of the Cross and Temple of the Foliated Cross, which surround the Plaza del Sol; and the Temple of the Inscriptions. You will also visit the Agua Azul National Park where you can appreciate an abundance of flora and fauna in a natural habitat full of mahogany, cedar and sapodilla trees, as well as birds, insects and small mammals. The beautiful blue waters, which have that color as a result of erosion (water flowing past the rocks causes small particles of lime containing magnesium salts and other chlorides to break off and dissolve) invite for a swim.
*For an additional $20/person we can also include a stop at the archeological site of Tonina. Over one thousand years of construction activity have created here a labyrinth of different eras, temples, palaces and stairways. Toniná's etymology means "Mansions of Stone".
