Of all Central America, Belize houses not only the only pine forest but one of radiant and mystical beauty. It is a treat to explore since the rest of the country is covered by typical tropical forests. Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve covers nearly 300 square miles with lush green pines that slope down bountiful mountain ranges and rest on the banks of icy rushing rivers. It is theorized that this forest is the remnant of a volcanic island that collided with the mainland a long time. Ancient rock dominates the area and is among some of the oldest rock formations in Central America. Traveling to the Mountain Pine Ridge the road eventually turns into unpaved rocky terrain that winds and curves through spectacular natural beauty. Mossy ferns and abundant vegetation blanket all around while exotic birds perch among the treetops and other wildlife play between the trees. Radiant shades of rainbow add flavor and zest to this unconventional forest located in the western part of Belize. The area is also dotted with beautiful waterfalls, streams and caves to walk through. Generally cooler than the rest of the country, this forest reserve is ideal for camping and hiking.
