HISTORY
The Spanish founded San Salvador in 1525, 30km to the northeast of where it now stands. In 1528 it was moved to its current location, and in 1546 it officially became a city. It was the scene of the first call for independence for Central America in 1811, and in 1834 the city became the capital of the United Provinces of Central America. El Salvador achieved independence of its own in 1839, and San Salvador has served as its capital since then.
As city's go, its had its fair share of good times and bad. Currently prospering, San Salvador has a rather patchy history. Natural disasters, the 12 year long civil war and ongoing gang crime and alleged corruption have taken their toll. The city was destroyed by tremors in 1854 and again in 1873, an eruption of nearby Volcan San Salvador caused significant damage in 1917, the city was flooded in 1934, not to mention two considerable earthquakes in the past three decades; most recently in 2001.
During the civil war a great number of the population from outside of the city, moved inwards in search of work and today over a quarter of the population of the country live within the metropolitan area. Business is booming, however despite the city producing almost 65% of the national GDP, unemployment is high, and there remains a very marked contrast between rich and poor.
