The greatest city of the Itza Maya is a place of wonder and magic and at Mayaland, you will feel it heartbeat. Hotel & Bungalows Mayaland was the first hotel built in Chichen Itza in 1923, and with its superb location amidst the temples, the first within an ancient site in the world. The hotel is a creation of old Yucatan in a style reminiscent of the hacienda nobility of a century ago. In the 100 acres of garden surrounding the main house you can hear birdsongs and see butterflies, and all the exotic fruits and flowers of tropical Yucatan. The main building was designed by Sylvanus G. Morley, the head of the Carnegie expedition that rebuilt Chichen Itza in the 1920s. Its Hacienda-style main corridor offers views of the ancient Mayan observatory. The Mayaland hotel is an experience in itself; one that will enrich your stay at Chichen Itza.
• 55 rooms and 5 suites in the main house, offering A/C, ceiling fans, satellite TV, mini bars, bathrooms hand-tiled in ceramic, marble and stone tubes, and breezy private balconies. Suites offer jacuzzis. • The bungalows are spread out in dual or three-unit villas throughout the beautifully landscaped hotel gardens. They all have large shaded terraces and verandas and come with the same amenities as the rooms and suites. • Swimming pools, tennis courts & three kilometers of trails for walking, jogging, cycling and horseback riding • Serveral bars and four restaurants • Convention hall • Massage & spa services • Craft shop, Golf cart service & tour desk
CUISINE
Mayaland's three restaurants and its poolside grill aim for authenticity and variety and are successful on both counts. Options include international cuisine as well as the best of both Mexico and Yucatan. Regional Yucatecan cooking is a world apart from the tacos and refried beans one generally associates with Mexico. The Yucatecans take pride in being different, and so they are. Their cuisine depends heavily on pork and turkey, rare spices, Mayan cooking techniques, and a love of olives and peas. The kitchen takes its fruits and herbs, and many of the vegetables directly from the garden; it is no wonders the results are so delightful. Service is low-key and efficient in dining rooms whose ambiance ranges from informal to refined. School children perform regional folk dances at lunch, and in the evening guitar-strumming minstrels fill the air with the music of Yucatan's favorite composers.
