Dolphins at Anthony's Key Resort

Dive and interact with dolphins

Anthony's Key Resort dolphin encounter and educational programs will satisfy the curiosity of guests of all ages. Here, you can snorkel with dolphins or dive with them in the open sea, accompanied by a dolphin behaviorist and videographer. Become a trainer-for-a-day, or enroll in a dolphin specialty course. During the summer months Anthony's Key Resort and the Roatan Institute for Marine Sciences offer a six-day Dolphin Scuba Camp where children learn about and interact with dolphins. They also hone new snorkeling or scuba skills, and learn about the island's eco-system and culture.

The dolphin programs offer the unusual opportunity for divers and snorkelers to interact with dolphins on the mammal's own initiative. Interaction is achieved by the dolphin's natural curiosity. The open water dive is the optimal way to observe the dolphins in their natural habitat, where there is no feeding enticement to secure interaction with humans. The dolphin snorkel provides more opportunity for physical contact. For those who prefer to stay in waist-deep water, a dolphin beach encounter is also popular.

Bookings for all Dolphin Programs must be made on the island through the Roatan Institute for Marine Sciences. Guests of Anthony's Key Resort are given priority scheduling. Participants must attend a short orientation. Rental equipment is available.

Dolphin Dives

Eight divers at a time take a five minute boat ride to a shallow reef wall, accompanied by a dive guide, dolphin behaviorist and videographer. Divers spend 45 minutes observing, photographing and playing with the dolphins in the open ocean, in depths of up to 60' over a white sand bottom. Dives are unstructured, and the naturally curious dolphins are free to interact as they choose, often revealing complexities of their relationships and communication. Divers need a certification card to participate.
Price per person: $110 ($137 per non-guest)

Dolphin Snorkel or Swim

Accompanied by a dolphin behaviorist and videographer, a maximum of ten snorkelers interact with the dolphins off a white-sand key in approximately 20 feet of water. Following a 25-minute beach encounter, the snorkel session begins, and lasts approximately 30 minutes, allowing participants maximum opportunities for physical contact. If the dolphins choose not to interact, there is a private area for them within the two-acre enclosure.
Minimum age: 13
Price per person: $83 ($103 per non-guest)

Dolphin Specialty Course

For those who would like a more in-depth study of bottlenose dolphins, RIMS offers a two-day course combining classroom sessions with hands-on interaction. Slides, transparencies and videos profile past and present dolphin research at various locations throughout the world. Participants will study the physiology and behavior of dolphins, as well as discuss conservation issues that affect their future.
The interactive sessions give participants the opportunity to work with the animals as a trainer to initiate various trained behaviors. An illustrated text book, and a specialty course photo ID are provided, and participants leave this experience with extensive knowledge and appreciation for these remarkable marine mammals. Class is held on two consecutive days from 4:30-6:00pm, so guests may take advantage of scheduled boat dives earlier in the day.
Price per person: $160 ($202 per non-guest)

Dolphin Trainer For-A-Day

This unique program offers participants the opportunity to spend the entire day with the training staff at the Roatan Institute for Marine Sciences. Go "behind the scenes" and learn about their daily care and food preparation. Also learn about dolphin anatomy and training techniques during "hands-on" interactive sessions with the dolphins. Participants will also have the chance to work one-on-one with the dolphins and initiate trained behaviors both in and out of the water.
Price per person: $160 ($202 per non-guest)

Dolphin Beach Encounter

Participants enter our Bailey's Key lagoon from the gently sloping beach and wade into waist-deep water. A trained staff member offers an informative, "hands-on" interaction with a resident dolphin. This encounter requires no swimming skills, and is ideal for small children, the elderly, and anyone who wants to interact with dolphins without cumbersome snorkeling gear. Provides great photo opportunities.
Price per person: $50 ($62 per non-guest)

* There are no advanced bookings; all dolphin arrangements are to be made on property.
