Ceibal: The impressive ruins of Ceibal served as a tollgate for barges plying the river in ancient Mayan times. Travel by vehicle to the banks of the La Passion River, and then take a boat across the river to visit Ceibal. Ceibal is also considered “The Mayan Art Gallery” because of its well-preserved stellae. Topoxte & Yaxha: These two important Mayan archeological sites are located on Yaxha lagoon. Upon arrival board a “cayuco” (motorized canoe) to visit Topoxte located on an Island located in the Lake. This has recently been restored to show how the Maya lived and protected themselves on the Island. After lunch, transfer to Yaxha considered to be the largest city of the Maya world. Ixcun, Maya Museum & Mopan Waterfalls:We depart at 8am heading in a south-easterly direction towards Poptun. Quite close to the Belize border and the Maya site of Caracol lies Ixcún. Ixcún is interesting as it boasts some of the largest Maya stelae in Pétén yet the majority of structures remain mostly overgrown by the lush surrounding jungle. After exploring the site you’ll drive to Dolores and take a tour of the small but interesting museum housing artifacts from nearby Maya sites.
